The Chippy Doon The Lane VS. The Bungo Bar & Kitchen
Ding ding! In the blue corner we have The Chippy Doon The Lane!
And in the red corner we have The Bungo Bar & Kitchen!
In today's blog we compare and contrast these very different Glasgow venues which will both play host to WHODUNNIT Murder Mystery events in June 2018.
ROUND ONE - LOCATION
GLASGOW CITY CENTRE VS. GLASGOW SOUTHSIDE
Situated just off Buchanan Street at the end of McCormick Lane, The Chippy Doon the Lane is housed on the first floor of Glasgow’s iconic McCormick Printers building. Having completely transformed the building they have been serving up fresh and authentic fish and chips to the families, diners and shoppers of Glasgow since 2007.
A very central location indeed with both Central & Queen Street train stations nearby aswell as many bus stops along Queen St, Union St & Argyll Street, & St Enoch Square & Buchanan St & Argyll St subway stops.
The Bungo Bar & Kitchen is a popular local neighbourhood restaurant at the heart of Glasgow's vibrant Southside with a great community spirit. The Bungo is a stylish, inviting bar & kitchen with a lively personality and relaxed ambiance – they love to make you feel welcome!
Another great location with two train stations nearby - Queens Park & Pollokshields West - and many bus stops along Pollokshaws Road nearby.
VERDICT: While the Chippy caters to customers in the city centre & the Bungo in the Southside they both offer great public transport links & have a warm, inviting atmosphere.
ROUND TWO - CUISINE
TRADITIONAL FOOD VS. SEASONAL MENU
The Chippy Doon The Lane offer a fresh and up-market twist on the old school fish and chips we all know and love. They are specialists in the art of cooking fresh fish. Ranging from traditional classics such as Cod and Haddock to more contemporary choices such as Monkfish Tail and Coley. All of which have been carefully selected with sustainability in mind. The Chippy provides a unique dining experience for the whole family.
As Times Out put it in their review of the Chippy in their review entitled 'Batter Than The Rest'...
Sometimes good old fish and chips is the only thing that will do. This was more than good.
The Bungo Bar & Kitchen pride themselves on using local suppliers to serve up a unique contemporary menu which changes with the seasons to reflect what is plentiful and within a few food miles. Their vision is to be a neighbourhood restaurant where locals and tourists can find something for everyone with everything on the menu being a really fantastic version, even if it were a day to day dish.
Home-made beef burgers on a great quality bun, their own beetroot relish, trademark fresh mayo with chipotle, ayrshire maris piper potatoes, scrubbed with their skin on and hand cut into the optimum 10mm square, tossed in maldon sea salt and fresh rosemary. The Bungo try to make every element of the dish count and add something.
Neighbourhood dining doesn't get better.
The List Eating & Drinking Guide
VERDICT: Both restaurants offer responsibly sourced menus with a range of course options to delight any customer.
ROUND THREE - CUSTOMER SERVICE
CATERING FOR SPECIFIC DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
The Chippy can cater for gluten-free diners (gluten-free batter or grilled) and vegetarians. You can let WHODUNNIT's Event Coordinator Chris know about any other specific dietary requirements for anyone in your party by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and Chris can run these past the Chippy's chef. Please note that dietary requirement cannot be accommodated at our event on June 9th without prior notice.
To make life easier for those with intolerances or specific dietary requirements The Bungo avoid the use of flour in dishes where it isn't strictly necessary & never in soups or sauces. They always have a veggie soup option which is also suitable for vegans and they stock soya milk and ice cream as well as the vegan options on the menu. They keep a fryer free from flour for coeliacs & they can do gluten free fish suppers using gram flour.
The Chef's team at the Bungo have asked to receive everyone's food orders at least a week in advance of our June 16th Murder Mystery event so that they are able to prepare your meal to their very high standard. WHODUNNIT's Event Coordinator Chris will email you once you've booked tickets to confirm your orders & dietary requirements.
VERDICT: While it's great that the Chippy can cater for gluten-free & vegetarian diners, The Bungo goes a step further by offering many appetising options for vegan customers. However the Bungo would like orders for all Murder Mystery participants at least a week in advance whereas the Chippy only ask for dietary requirements prior to the event.
